Jansport J (who’s produced for the likes of Snoop Dogg, Ab-Soul, Tha Dogg Pound, Dom Kennedy, Strong Arm Steady, Hawdwerk, El Prez, Freddie Gibbs, The Eastsidaz, Planet Asia, Glasses Malone, and many more) and I met in 2012 on the set of Respect the music video (in collaboration with Hawdwerk and directed by none other than my big brother Trescher Catron). We vibed about everything — particularly the 90’s being a great moment in time for Hip Hop and NBA basketball, two aspects of culture that left an imprint on us while growing up.
A couple of years later, I had the idea that I wanted to do a music project. I envisioned a concept heavy scripted short with a score created by a Hip Hop producer. So, I contacted Sport to see if he’d be interested in creating the music. He’d just released For Love, an album that he said represented everything that people do, for better or worse, for and out of love. If it was a concept album I needed, I was free to use For Love.
The project quickly became a collaboration amongst artists and friends in the truest sense.
I sat down with Sport and interviewed him for hours about life, love, music, and producing.
Playwright Crescent McGlone delved into the music and wrote shorts that explored different kinds of love.
Performing artist Von Ali Wright directed half of the shorts and choreographed the dance sequences.
Award-winning filmmakers Trescher Catron, Benjamin Redmond, Drew Veaux, and Edwin Kim each shot different pieces, which featured a long list of talented actors, and Shawn Kim brought some of Sport’s interview to life through animation.
Emmy award-winning composer Matthew Head reimagined For Love into a score – if you don’t know these names, you will.
And producer Dana Maris Buckley helped me take a short idea and turn it into For Love, an 85-minute experimental documentary made, with love, by too many talented people and one amazing music producer who allowed us take his life and his work and remix it through film.
For Love will be in festivals and released this year.
With and always For Love,
