Coffee Shop – Dr. Anissa Holmes

Dr. Anissa Broussard Holmes knows the importance of a beautiful smile. With 13 years of dentistry under her belt, one of Dr. Holmes’ specialties is cosmetic restoration. She is currently teaming up with OCEAN Style Magazine for PROJECT SMILE, a contest that was launched last week where she will choose one lucky winner to receive complimentary reconstruction of the teeth in his/her smile zone. Giving back is very important to Dr. Holmes, and as if that wasn’t enough, she’s gorgeous, brainy, good with her hands AND she knows her way around the kitchen. We’re thrilled to feature her in this week’s edition of Coffee Shop.

Ocean Splash: Did you always know that you wanted to be a dentist? Not exactly. I was always intrigued by doctors, and their desire to help others in need. I thought that I would be a Pediatrician. I first became interested in Dentistry while doing an externship at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry Pediatric Dental Clinic. A few months later, I was given early admission to their next entering class. The rest is history!

OS: How long have you been a dentist? This June will make 13 years.

OS: What do you do to unwind from a hectic day at your practice? During the week, I normally spend the evenings with my Husband and Children. I also enjoy mid-week dinners with Close Friends. On the weekends, I enjoy going to the gym and playing golf when I can. Sundays are always beach days!!

OS: What’s one message that you would like our readers to know about taking care of their teeth? More than anything, I want my patients to be healthy. The same bacteria found in Gum Disease that comes from Plaque is linked to Heart Disease and Low Birth Weight Babies. Many people assume that they are brushing well. However, because we all develop patterns of brushing, such as cleaning the left teeth better if we are right handed, for example, we often miss places. That is the value of every 6 month cleanings. At the dental office, we use bright lights and mirrors to see those areas that are missed. We also take x-rays to look under existing fillings and crowns. Oftentimes, all looks well with a clinical exam, and the x-ray reveals a different picture. By detecting problems early, we can save people from needing more extensive care, such as root canals and extractions.

OS: What’s your most recent splurge? I recently bought a beautiful pair of Bvlgari Sunglasses. I have my eyes on the White Ceramic and Pink Gold Bvlgari Pendant.

OS: Top 3 things that make you feel sexy? Hmm. I like beautiful jewelry, a beautiful dress, and believe it or not…exercising!

OS: If you could have a celebrity dinner party, tell us six people that you would absolutely want on your guest list.
I would definitely invite Prince, Alicia Keys, Ellen Degeneres, Morgan Freeman, Oprah Winfrey, and Beres Hammond.
OS: What book are you reading , or the last book you read? I am currently reading the Steve Jobs Biography..interesting read.

OS: Do you cook? If so, what do you think is your best dish to prepare? I am from New Orleans…need I say more? Some of my favorite dishes to prepare are Gumbo, Jambalaya, Crawfish Bisque, and for the sweet tooth, Creole Pecan Pralines. Too bad my husband has a shellfish allergy.

OS: Where is your favorite place in the Caribbean to vacation? One of the most beautiful places that I have visited was the Exumas in the Bahamas. In Jamaica, I love the Caves and the Rockhouse Hotel in Negril, as well as Half Moon in Montego Bay.

OS: If your life had a theme song what would it be? Lucky by Jason Mraz

OS: If you had to choose a place outside of the Caribbean, where would you go on your next vacation?I would love to go to Greece and Italy.

OS: Who is your favorite designer? I really like Michael Kors.

OS: If you could eat one food in excess-without gaining a pound, what would it be?
The Sushi Pizza with Tuna or Salmon and Creme Cheese at Majestic Sushi and Grill at Villa Ronai in Kingston is to die for

OS: Favorite way to stay in shape? I love Zumba, Weight Training, Pilates, and Golf.

OS: What’s one luxury item that you could do without if giving it back would help to boost the economy? My car.

OS: What do you love most about being a dentist? I am most Passionate about being able to fuse Art and Science together to Create Beautiful Smiles. Many times people come in embarrassed, scared, or unsure if their smile can be improved. The most amazing thing is that no case is too complex. We are able to use Porcelain Veneers, Crowns, and Bridges and other forms of Cosmetic Dentistry to totally reconstruct the appearance of the teeth and smile. Missing teeth, no matter how many, can also be brought back to their original look and strength with Dental Implants. It’s quite amazing!!

OS: If you could have any other career what would it be? I really enjoy Art and working with my Hands, so it would probably be Mosaic tiling or Interior House Design. I also could see myself as a consultant to businesses in Social Media Marketing.
