Coffee Shop – Jay Blessed

by Tuere Randall

Vivacious, fun and in the know, we caught up to media maven Jamie Alleyne-Morris, better known to the masses as “Jay Blessed”, the reigning “Queen of Caribbean Entertainment News and Gossip”. She’s done everything from TV to radio and now she’s tackling the blogosphere with her site www.jayblessed.com. She’s also quite cheeky with a wicked sense of humor (and as you will see shortly from her answers, her personality pops off the page). Come chill with us in the Coffee Shop.

First off, Happy (Belated) Mother’s Day! What did you do for Mother’s Day?
Thank you! I spent the early part of my day with my mother-in-law while we were DC for my sis-in-law’s graduation from Howard University, then I returned to spend the evening with my vivacious and adorable 7 year old. Btw: my gift was the arrival of my mother from Trinidad, the very next day!

Nice! I was a little shocked when I read your bio — you wear many hats –wife, mother, radio personality, philanthropist, blogger — how do you manage all of these roles AND stay on top of the up-to-the-minute news that you cover on your site?
I am still trying to figure out how I manage too!!! LOL. Having supportive people around really assists me in completing my projects. Plus taking a day or two off is sometimes necessary to stay refreshed!

How did you get into the media business? What made you think that this was something that you could do and do well?
I’ve always been enamored with people that worked in media. As a kid growing up in T&T I fell in love with Keith Smith’s writing in the Express, Allyson Hennessy on Community Dateline, the husky sound of Sharon Pitts’ voice on radio, Dominic Kalipersad on the nightly news and would steal a chance, as a kid, to watch Oprah on TV! To me, these people had poise, intelligence and your attention. They were masters at their craft and possessed a certain kind of power to engage and stimulate your mind with their words and stories that just kept you in awe. I wanted to accomplish that also.

You’ve gotten to do some pretty exclusive scoops in your career. Are there any that you still think “Wow, I can’t believe I landed that!”?
I can’t believe I landed the Anya Ayoung–Chee interview two days after she won Project Runway, unbeknownst to me. She was very humble and laid back and really inspired me with her story. I also can’t believe I was able to sit and reason with Cedella Marley, daughter of the legendary Bob Marley. She too is quite a talented designer but also a perspicacious business woman.

You must get invited to a lot of high profile events. Who are your go-to designers for red carpet glamour?
I can’t go anywhere without first hitting up Simon Duncan, that’s family. However, things are now getting hectic, so I’ve also enlisted the help of stylist Crystal Boucaud, sister of fashion designer, Christian Boucaud.

Whose sense of style do you admire?
I actually admire Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé’s sense of style.

What’s the last thing you splurged on?
Ha…bloggers don’t splurge! LOL! Last splurge would have to be a Sherri Hill dress I bought for $450, other than that, I am quite prudent.

You’re in the public eye – how do you stay fit? Do you have a personal trainer?
Those questions are funny…my husband is quite the health and fitness fanatic. So I do my workout by watching him workout. (laughter) I used to skip meals to fit into dresses but I have now adapted a more conscious approach on the way, the times and the kinds of food I eat. Working out is 30%, the rest is your diet.

What’s the last book you read?
I recently read 101 Ways to Promote Yourself by Raleigh Pinskey but had to switch up to find out what the craze is all about with this 50 Shades of Grey. We got to have equilibrium in life, eh!

Do you have a signature perfume?
My signature perfume is Gucci Guilty.

Your blog features quite a bit of celebrity gossip. Then again, you know a lot of people in “the industry”. Do you ever worry about offending anyone?
I actually don’t. Most of the celebs don’t mind the stories because it adds to their publicity. However, I have posted (verbatim), what a few celebs have stated on social networks to millions of people, and they have gotten upset when I republish their words. That’s not crazy – that’s just dumb. If you don’t want me to write about it, don’t put it out there…simple! But despite that, I will never write about someone’s child unless given permission and I am very conscious of marital relationships.

Which islands in the Caribbean have you visited?
You mean which islands I have yet to visit. I’d love to visit Martinique, St. Barths, the whole French Antilles, St. Vincent and of course, Haiti.

Name one place that you haven’t been to that’s on your wishlist of places to see?
As a Caribbean woman, I’d have to say Dominica, just because they have some of the most beautiful waterfalls in the whole world.

Handbags: Fendi or Louis Vuitton?
Louis Vuitton.

Music: Soca or Reggae?
I have to represent for Soca to the fullest!

Champagne: Moët or Veuve Clicquot?
I love Veuve Clicquot. Please tell Douglas Gordon to mail me a bottle, please and thanks! LOL

Superheroines: Catwoman or Wonder Woman?
Though I love Wonder Woman, I’d pick Catwoman because she oozes sex appeal and her costume is hella fierce! Talk about dominatrix attire. Love it!

Speaking of which, what is your ultimate “girl power” song?
My ultimate “girl power” song would definitely have to be “Roll It Gal” by Alison Hinds. Listen and meditate on those lyrics, they are very empowering.

If you weren’t a media personality, what else do you think you would do as a career?
I’ve learnt that things are only impossible if you allow it to be. So if I wasn’t in media, I would seriously consider being an attorney in the field of immigration.

What words of wisdom would you offer to a younger woman who was trying to make it where you are?
The best advice I can give to anyone seeking to achieve anything in life, is to wholeheartedly pursue that dream despite the odds, despite the opposition and despite the doubt…even within yourself. Surround yourself with wise people that have accomplished what you are trying to attain and learn as much as you can. And when you’ve gotten there, wherever there might be, remember to pass on the blessing.
